Erin partnered with the University of Technology Sydney’s Centre for Social Justice and Inclusion to develop a visualisation of a community-led research project articulating the key elements that contribute to building accessible and inclusive communities in the unique inner Sydney areas of Glebe, Ultimo, Pyrmont, and Haymarket. The primary goal was to create a visual roadmap that not only conveyed important information but also captured the distinct character and feel of these neighbourhoods.
The audience for this infographic included both the university, local partners and the community. Therefore, it was crucial that the design felt friendly and human. Hand-drawn illustrations added warmth and personality to the infographic, ensuring it was inviting and accessible to the audience. Additionally, visual elements such as the iconic inner-Sydney terrace houses were included to tailor the graphic to the local context.
The design was aligned with the brand guidelines of the UTS Centre for Social Justice and Inclusion (CSJI), which utilise a colour palette of red, grey, and black. To maintain a balance between brand consistency and visual appeal, the graphic was softened by using tints of red and grey. This achieved a more approachable and friendly aesthetic.
The final result is a visual roadmap that not only effectively communicates the elements of accessible and inclusive communities but also resonates with the unique identity of these inner Sydney neighbourhoods.
“The final design exceeded our expectations. One of our key goals was to communicate data back to community in an accessible and creative way, which Erin absolutely achieved. Our team was particularly impressed at how well Erin was able to integrate our branding in a way that complemented our goals. The design is clear, easy to understand, and exciting to engage with… From the outset, Erin used diverse imagery in our data visualisation. With other designers, we’ve had to go back and request more diverse representation but Erin got this right from the very beginning which we really appreciate…
We are really grateful to collaborate with Erin and are looking forward to working with her again in the future.”
